Khapalu Fort, also known as Yabgo Khar, is a stunning 19th-century royal palace perched dramatically above the Shyok River in Khapalu town, Ghanche District, Gilgit-Baltistan. Built by the Yabgo dynasty, the fort blends Tibetan, Mughal, and Central Asian architectural styles and stands as one of the finest examples of Balti craftsmanship in Pakistan. Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), it now operates as a heritage hotel and cultural landmark. Surrounded by terraced gardens, ancient apricot orchards, and jaw-dropping mountain panoramas, Khapalu Fort is a must-visit for history lovers and cultural explorers.
Itinerary
Day 1 — Skardu to Khapalu
Depart Skardu in the morning via the Shyok River road. Stop at Skardu Bazaar for supplies. Drive through dramatic gorges and high desert landscapes to Khapalu town. Check-in at local guesthouse or the fort hotel. Evening walk around the town's old bazaar and ancient mosque.
Day 2 — Fort Exploration & Return
Morning visit to Khapalu Fort — explore the multi-storeyed palace, royal chambers, prayer hall, and restored gardens. Learn about the Yabgo dynasty history from local guides. Afternoon return to Skardu via scenic Shyok Valley route.
