Overview
The Kargah Buddha is a remarkable 7th-century rock carving etched into a cliff face in the Kargah Nullah (gorge) about 10 km west of Gilgit city. Standing approximately 5 metres tall, this ancient Buddhist statue is one of the finest examples of early Buddhist art in the entire Gilgit-Baltistan region, dating back to a time when Buddhism flourished along the Silk Road. The figure is carved in high relief with characteristic lotus pedestal and halo, demonstrating strong Gandharan artistic influences.
Half-Day Excursion from Gilgit
Morning
Depart Gilgit after breakfast. Short 10-km drive to Kargah Nullah entrance. Walk through the dramatic rocky gorge (30–40 min easy trail). Arrive at the Kargah Buddha carving — explore and photograph.
Midday
Return hike to the road. Optional visit to nearby Gilgit Museum for regional archaeological exhibits.
Afternoon
Return to Gilgit city. Visit Gilgit Bazaar for local handicrafts, dried fruits, and gems before continuing your onward journey.
